Five or seven years ago I went through a phase where I was really excited about postcards, I would ask my online friends for their addresses and send them snail mail. I collected a whole drawer full of cool postcard sets to use for this, but unfortunately nobody ever sent one back so the practice of exchanging them never caught on.
There’s an online tool called Postcrossing where you can exchange postcards with strangers, and that was fun for a while too but since there’s no way to get to know the people beyond the introduction to a stranger, it wound up feeling a little bit too “small talk” oriented for me. I enjoyed putting a little bit of personality into the ones I sent friends, a sarcastic inside joke or reference to a current event they’d recently mentioned.
Anyway, I saw this post going around about the Ides of Trump, a postcard campaign to bombard the White House with postcards expressing how we really feel – all of them dropped in the mail on the same day, March 15. Of course I instantly thought of my vast unused collection, gathering dust in a drawer. Of course I will send one!!
A quick search shows this idea has been around, I’m seeing it as far back as 2017, so if you find this post after it passes, rest assured you can participate next year (if we even still have a post office by then). Have fun!!
